Adults & Children
Shearing Day is one of our biggest events of the year. It's a unique, behind-the-scenes experience where you can get up close to these gentle, curious creatures and learn all about how they are sheared, the fleece-to-fiber process, and how the fleece is spun into yarn.
It's a fun and educational day on the farm - perfect for families, fiber lovers, aspiring breeders, and anyone who simply loves alpacas.
Future Dates:
- April 29, 2028
- April 28, 2029
- April 27, 2030

More than 35 alpacas (plus 2 llamas) will be sheared throughout the day, and the public is welcome to watch, learn, and explore.
Alpaca shearing isn’t just about giving them a fresh new look - it’s essential for their health and comfort.
Unlike some animals, alpacas don’t naturally shed their fleece, and without an annual trim, they can easily overheat in the warmer months. Shearing helps prevent heat stress, keeps the herd clean, and allows us to collect their luxurious fiber to be turned into the yarn and hand-knitted goods that you'll find in our online shop and farm store.
It’s a win-win for the alpacas and for us!

Why Shearing Matters

How are Alpacas Sheared?
Alpacas can be sheared standing up or stretched out on the ground or a table with out any harm to the animal. We prefer to lie them down, tying the front legs together and the back legs together. This method allows the shearer to work faster and get a more even cut. We think it is less stressful too because it is faster. Typically each animal is sheared in less than 10 minutes.
Past Shearing Day Events
Island Alpaca has been inviting the community to Shearing Day since 2008 - making it one of our longest-running springtime traditions!
